The all new RST integrated airbag range is ever advancing and is quickly set to be the future of motorcycle safety, however we understand that it can all seem very complicated. We're going to break it down and help you understand some airbag jargon!

RST have been working with In&Motion Airbag who specialise in engineering wearable air bag systems.

Why wear an airbag jacket?

Although most motorcycle jackets have a dedicated back protector, the airbag is specifically designed to protect all of our vulnerable areas such as the thorax, abdomen, spine and collarbone by stabilising the torso on impact. This effectively reduces or avoids injury. The Airbag systems available now are the pinnacle of road and track safety.

How does it work?

The technology is super easy to use, it has two algorithms, so you simply just set it to road or track via the app dependent on your riding discipline. It has an electronic detection system with embedded algorithms to activate the air bag. Basically, the algorithms analyse the riders movements 1000 times a second, so it can very cleverly work out how you move and if you have a fall, this allows It to respond amazingly quickly, for example, it takes less than 33MS to detect a fall and less than 22MS to inflate. Once inflated it protects all those vital parts we mentioned earlier on. The In&Motion software constantly collects data, so it is always improving its algorithm to offer even better customised protection to that specific rider.

Can I feel the airbag in the jacket?

The range is designed so that the product doesn't appear bulky and mis-shapen at all. The airbag cannot be felt whilst out riding. If the airbag was to deploy, the airbag will inflate around your torso, keeping you stable.

Do I need to connect to my bike?

No the box itself is wireless, so no messy cables or sensors to get tangled up in and damage.

How should it fit?

Try on in-store for your correct size and comfort just as you would any other motorcycle gear, it needs to fit tight but feel comfortable. Take into consideration if you will be wearing hoody, fleece, t shirt etc while you’re riding (you don’t want it to be flapping around or squeezing the breath out your lungs!) if you’re unsure just ask in-store for fitting advice.

How much is it?

The RST Airbag range starts from £279.99. You will need to be an in&motion member in order to recieve continious optimisation. There are two options available for this: A) You can either subscribe for £12 a month/£120 a year. You can cancel this anytime, have the option to purchase after three years of leasing and get the new generation of In&Box when it is available. Alternatively, B) for £399 you can purchase the box which comes with two year warranty and continious optimisation.

Where can I try one?

SMC Bikes currently stocks a wide range of sizes in the airbag jacket. Please call us on 01142525454 for more information or pop into store.

Sheffield Motorcycle Centre Ltd  is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd, who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows Sheffield Motorcycle Centre Ltd  to act as a credit broker, not as a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only.

We can introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. An introduction to a lender does not amount to independent financial advice and we act as their agent for this introduction. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next best offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure the best deal you are eligible for from our panel of lenders. Lenders may pay a fixed commission to us for introducing you to them, calculated by reference to the vehicle model or amount you borrow. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement, all of which are set by the lender concerned. If you ask us what the amount of commission is, we will tell you in good time before the Finance agreement is executed. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18’s or over. Guarantees may be required.
